WHAT’S HOT (AND WHAT’S NOT) IN HOME INTERIORS

February 27, 2019

The New Home Experts Las Vegas recently sat down with award-winning interior designer, Cary Vogel, to discuss current trends and offer a little direction when it comes to the fun part of buying a new home.

Cary – along with business partner and husband, Lance Robins – owns design studios in Las Vegas and New York City and has provided his services on all types of projects from family estates to high-rise penthouses and from desert contemporary residences to rustic mountainside cabins to beachfront properties. Cary’s work has appeared in numerous publications and has received all types of awards, including the Interior Design Society’s Designer of the Year in 2016 and awarded the HOUZZ “Design” and “Service” distinctions every year since 2013.

WHAT’S HOT

Cary says we’re going back to the ’80s for influence. Warmer, more inviting colors are back in vogue, such as shades of moss green, camel and gold tones as well as claret and brick reds.

Curved upholstered furniture with a softer look is also hot again, and a washed or antique designed area rug fits in like a favorite pair of well-worn jeans. Of course, animal skin prints never go out of style.

When it comes to finishes, you can’t go wrong with white, cream and lighter colors or even combinations. Don’t be afraid to mix metals either like brass and polished nickel.

WHAT’S NOT

The starker, cold industrial look is not what’s in when it comes to interior design, says Cary. Out are all varieties of grey as well as that boxy, minimalist-designed furniture. Cold is out and warm is in.

FOCUS ON QUALITY

Cary says that interior design trends change every 8-10 years and not to get too hung up on the latest fashion. “What you want to do is know what’s going on in terms of trends, but the key is to think long term and look to quality,” he says. “Buy what you love.”
