THE LOGISTICS OF A LAS VEGAS MOVE

Moving to Las Vegas? Then congratulations are in order. It’s a great town … something you’ll learn first-hand soon enough!

Also in order? Suggestions about making your move as smooth as possible. Here are six of them.

1. Expect Company

Every year, tens of millions of people move in the United States. Roughly 8 out of 10 of those moves happen between April and September. If you’re moving to Las Vegas during this period, expect to compete for the attention of moving-related services and tasks.

Those may include everything from turning on cable and internet service to enrolling children in local schools. In the summer months of June, July, and August, movers tend to be in especially high demand.

2. Keep Your Cool

Also high in those summer months is the average temperature in Las Vegas, which ranges between 101 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Whether you’re assuming the bulk of the moving load or hiring it out, keep cool by:

• Keeping bottles of water nearby and hydrating well
• Avoiding overexertion and exposure to the elements, which can lead to heat exhaustion
• Wearing sunscreen and clothing that’s cool and comfortable

3. Book a Moving Company Early …

A straightforward cross-town move merits advanced notice of at least four weeks. If you’re moving to a new state, though, that requires more planning on everyone’s part. Go ahead and ratchet that notice up to 12 weeks.

Wait any longer, and you might be out of luck hiring the movers you’d prefer to use.

4. … But Don’t Panic If You Can’t

If you do connect with the movers too late, you might consider throwing caution to the wind and hiring a moving company you haven’t taken the time to research. Worse yet, you might even consider a less reputable moving company.

Don’t do it. It’s better to parcel out your Las Vegas move over an extended period than risk a dire situation with an unscrupulous business.

5. Mind the “Spaghetti Bowl”

Locals refer to the freeway interchange of Interstate 15, Interstate 515, U.S. Route 93, and U.S. Route 95 as the Spaghetti Bowl. (Imagine an aerial view of all those roadways winding every which way like strands of cooked spaghetti noodles.)

If you’re going to run into traffic congestion during your move to Las Vegas, there’s a good chance it’ll happen in the Spaghetti Bowl.

6. Money Matters

If you’re moving to Las Vegas after selling a house, you might have a notable amount of money on-hand. Because of this area’s relative affordability, that may hold true even if you’ve already put something down on a new home.

(And since Nevada doesn’t have a state income tax, your bank account might be looking even better.)

You might have that money earmarked for a vacation, luxury item(s), or something else. If not, make an appointment with a financial advisor once you’re settled in. Despite the region’s affordability, making carefully considered plans with your money is always a safe bet.
