A massive development on the north side of Downtown Birmingham, which would include the re-development of the North Woodward parking garage, has been proposed by Woodward Bates Partners; The Woodward Bates Project could add hundreds of parking spaces, as well as new housing and businesses.
Located near the northwest corner of Willits Street & North Old Woodward (and wrapping around existing buildings towards North Bates Street), the $133M project would include demolishing the current 5-story parking structure and replacing it with a 7-story structure, as well as 3 new buildings: a new five-story mixed use building that adjoins the new parking structure, a five-story mixed-use building at the corner of Bates and Willits and a five-story mostly residential building on the west side of Bates Street.
Plans also call for extending North Bates Street so that it connects with Old Woodward, while adding a plaza that would be adjacent to Booth Park.
The residential component is expected to include for-rent apartments in the $3,000 to $4,500 range; construction is expected to take 18 to 24 months, once the development is approved. You can read more about the Woodward Bates Project via Hometown Life, here.
