THE FORT SHELBY

August 02, 2017

When The Fort Shelby in Detroit was reborn as a Doubletree Hotel in 2008, 56 units in the 21-story tower were turned into apartments; now, those apartments are in the process of becoming for-sale condos.  Located at West Lafayette Blvd and 1st Street in Downtown Detroit, the original building was built in 1916, with the tower added in 1926; both were added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

After a lifetime as a hotel, a full renovation began in 2006 with work on the now mixed-use property completed in late 2008.  In June, it was announced that the apartments were being converted into for-sale condos, meaning ownership of a residence in this historic building was finally a possibility.

Starting in the $280s for a 1 bedroom, and priced upwards of $550k for a 3 bedroom, 6 penthouses will also be available, ranging from $350k to $815k.  All of the units for sale will be located between the 11th and 21st floors in the tower.

As of the June grand opening, about 25% of the available units are spoken for; the rest are expected to be sold within the next 12-18 months.  Several units are currently listed with The Loft Warehouse; if you’re working with an agent, have them reach out to TLW directly.
