NY TIMES EXPLORES NATIONAL HOUSING CRISIS VIA KALAMAZOO.
For everything that affects the housing market – interest rates, consumer sentiment, elections, etc – inventory is where the discussion starts and stops; none of those other things matter if there aren’t houses to buy.
And that seems to be where we are in the discussion right now; inventory.
Specifically, why there isn’t more of it.
Last month, The NY Times decided to dig deep into the national housing crisis, and ended up in Kalamazoo; a place where housing should be both affordable and attainable (at least, more so than in many other parts of the country), but is increasingly becoming less of each.
A combination of solutions will be required to address this problem, and undeniably, an increase in new home construction will be among them.

AUGUST 2024 NEIGHBORHOOD UPDATES
The long-awaited Hillside Townes by Robertson Brothers Homes near Downtown Farmington will be opening this fall, with the VIP list access now available. Pricing for the townhomes is still TBD.
Toll Brothers will be joining Roberston Brothers, Evergreen Homes, and other builders, at this sprawling multi-builder development in Commerce; prices for the Reserve at Crystal Lake (pictured above) are anticipated from the $800s.
We noted that Sterling Trail by Lombardo Homes was expected to open this fall in our update last month, now we have a grand opening date: September 21st. Located in South Lyon, pricing starts at $569,990.
SOMERSET WEST | TROY
We noted that this neighborhood was expected to open this fall in our Lombardo Homes update last month, now we have a grand opening date: September 21st. Located in South Lyon, pricing starts at $569,990. Plans were discussed at a Troy Planning Commission meeting earlier this month, by developer Forbes Co., co-owners of the neighboring Somerset Collection. Whether the residential units will be apartments or condos has not been determined yet. Located on the north side of Big Beaver just west of Coolidge Hwy, the massive 40-acre parcel could see construction starting as soon as next summer. Read more from Crain’s Detroit Business here.
