HEALTHY THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

November 04, 2020

by Michele Ciancimino

Most of us have a typical holiday routine that sounds something like this:

Sometime in November, you start running around shopping, partying, overdoing it on holiday cookies, and drinking a little too much. You’re not getting enough sleep and you’re pretty stressed, so then you catch a cold or flu….you can fill in the rest.

This year, for obvious reasons, some things will be different. We may not choose to travel to see family out of state as we usually do and we may choose to do our shopping online rather than risking the crowds at the mall. But, the eating, drinking, stress, and decreased immunity will most likely continue as usual.

I think it’s safe to say we are all looking forward to the end of 2020, but how can we approach the end of the year and maintain our good health while still enjoying the holidays?

The most common questions I hear are:

  • How can I maintain a positive mindset during the holidays?
  • Does sugar affect my immune system?
  • What are the best things to eat during the holidays?
  • How can I prevent digestive upset?
  • How do I strengthen my immune system?
  • How do I relieve stress and get more sleep?

HERE ARE A COUPLE OF TIPS:

To relieve stress, practice what I call “4/7/8 Breathing.” Sit quietly, even if it is just for a couple of minutes. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for a count of 7, and slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of 8. Your body will begin to relax and you will find some relief.

Focus on including a variety of plant foods in your diet daily to get the immune-boosting nutrients you need to supercharge your immune system. Some of the most important ones to support immune health are ginger, oats, garlic, citrus fruits, kiwi, and mushrooms.

See how many different colors of fruits and veggies you can get in every day. Aim to get 1 to 2 servings of fruit and even more veggies in a day. Adding greens to a smoothie is a great way to pack in a lot of vegetables.

Would you like some support to implement healthy holiday strategies and discuss your health concerns? I want to help ease your concerns and expand on the common questions I mentioned and other holiday issues. I created a “healthy holiday support group” and I’m calling it the Holiday Survival Program and I would be happy to support you in dealing with your health concerns as we finish up 2020.
